Opportunity: Youth Science Ambassador with Ocean Networks Canada

The Youth Science Ambassador Program connects youth with their local ocean environment, ocean data, and place-based Indigenous knowledge. Training provided.



Duties

  • Present in classroom to students about ocean literacy and the work that Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) does
  • Explore the connection between ocean science and Indigenous knowledge
  • Connect students and educators with ONC’s observatories and data
  • Assist with ocean data collection and local science projects
  • Act as a local contact for students and community members interested in the ocean and Ocean Networks Canada


Desired Skills and Qualities

  • Passionate about Indigenous knowledge and its connection to science
  • Experience working with youth and/or children
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Willing and able to travel
  • ​Combinations of education and experience will be considered ​

Locations

ONC hires Youth Science Ambassador positions in the following communities:

  • Iqaluit, Nunavut
  • Nunatsiavut, Nunavut
  • Kugluktuk, Nunavut
  • ​Cambridge Bay, Nunavut

The Youth Science Ambassadors will collaborate with each other across regions. Contact us for current openings. The position will require a paid training and orientation period in Victoria, BC. Some travel will be required. Travel expenses will be provided. Applicants must be 18-30 years old.
