NSERC to Fund Development of Ocean Sensing System

Dr. Craig Brown and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) will partner with Clearwater Seafoods, and two ocean technology companies, Quality Positioning Services BV and Blue C Design, to develop a state-of-the-art ocean sensing system and mapping capability, thanks to a $1 million investment from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to establish the NSERC Industrial Research Chair Colleges (IRCC) – Chair in Integration Ocean Mapping Technologies.

The funding, awarded through the College and Community Innovation (CCI) Program, will help NSCC strengthen its work with local industry to develop technologies that can better map the ocean seafloor. A greater understanding of our ocean seafloors will also have an enormous impact on the health of the ecosystem. With the data collected by the mapping technologies, the fishery can discover ways to reduce its impact and ensure sustainable stock harvests. While the initial focus for the chair is the application of this technology for the fishery, the five year research program holds significant potential to benefit other ocean industries like oil and gas, renewable energy and ocean tourism.
