Mouser Electronics Supports Innovative Technology Restoring Seagrass

Seagrass captures carbon faster than rainforests, protects coastlines, and nurtures marine life. Yet 90% of UK seagrass has vanished.

Mouser Electronics, a leading global distributor of electronic components, is supporting pioneering efforts to restore seagrass meadows, one of Earth’s most valuable yet overlooked ecosystems.

In a project led by conservation scientists, Mouser’s technology is helping develop an innovative underwater harvester that accelerates seagrass seed collection, making large-scale restoration faster, safer, and more precise.

Why Seagrass Matters

Seagrass meadows are among the most valuable coastal ecosystems on Earth, providing multiple ecological and societal benefits. They act as powerful carbon sinks, storing carbon up to 35 times more efficiently than tropical rainforests and accounting for about 10% of the ocean’s carbon despite covering only 0.2% of the seabed.

These underwater meadows also serve as biodiversity hotspots, offering habitat and nursery grounds for fish, invertebrates, and endangered species, which support global food security and local fisheries.

Seagrass stabilizes sediments and reduces wave energy, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges, while improving water quality by filtering pollutants and excess nutrients. Their role in mitigating climate change, safeguarding marine life, and supporting human livelihoods underscores the urgency of conserving and restoring these ecosystems worldwide.

Mouser Electronics Supports the Seagrass Harvester

Mark Patrick, Director of Technical Content at Mouser, commented: “We are very proud to be part of this endeavor supporting the restoration of ‘underwater rainforest’ environments. It’s exciting to see technology helping conservation in such a tangible way.”

“Manual seed collection is slow and costly. This project introduces a prototype that aims to collect seeds up to 100× faster than manual methods, opening the door for large-scale restoration worldwide. By supplying advanced components for the underwater seagrass harvester, such as sensors and microcontrollers, we hope to demonstrate how technology can accelerate ecological restoration without compromising scientific integrity or operational safety.”

“Mouser strives to demonstrate how innovation can accelerate ecological restoration without compromising scientific integrity or operational safety. This initiative follows on from Mouser’s previous sustainability projects, including the whale research and conservation program and the planting of 100,000 trees, one for every ADI order in 2024.”
