“This emergency rule means more time on the water catching more red grouper, and it is good news for Gulf of America fishermen,” said Eugenio Piñeiro Soler, Acting Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administrator. “NOAA Fisheries continues to promote opportunities for American men and women on the water, on the docks, and in the fisheries industries across our great nation.”
The emergency rule will be in effect through the 2025 fishing year, which ends December 31, 2025. The Gulf Council is developing an amendment to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf that considers increasing catch limits and modifying allocations between the commercial and recreational sectors. The council and NOAA Fisheries expect to implement this amendment in 2026.
NOAA Fisheries remains committed to our strong collaboration with local fishermen and fisheries management councils across the country to improve economic opportunities for American communities.
