Petróleos Mexicanos reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 6.3% in 2015 with respect to the previous year. The accumulated reduction since 2008 reached 40%.

In a statement Pemex said that they continue to put effort “in meeting the highest environmental protection standards.”

The company has supported the environmental protection and restoration of areas with the greatest biodiversity in Mexico, like the Jaguaroundi Ecological Park, the natural ecosystems of the middle basin of the Usumacinta river, the protected natural areas of the Gulf of Mexico and the climate change mitigation and adaptation project at Calakmul in the southeast of Mexico.

The collaboration with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONAMP, from its Spanish acronym) to preserve the Kemp’s ridley or Mexican ridley, which is a critically endangered species, is also highlighted. Pemex supported the installation of satellite sensors to identify the arrival of this turtles to the beach and the elaboration of educational videos on its behavior. The program aims at preserve the population of this species and has a potential to rescue 300 thousand turtles annually.

This is the sixteenth time that this report has been uninterruptedly published since 1999. The Spanish version of the 2015 Sustainability Report is available for consultation and downloads in the company’s website.
