Small Biz Pilot Provides Funds and DOE Lab Access

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded nearly $7M in Small Business Vouchers (SBVs) in Round 1. Approximately 50-60 vouchers remain for Rounds 2 and 3 of the SBV Pilot. The nine technology areas include Water Power and Wind.

The DOE SBV Pilot provides U.S. small businesses with unparalleled access to the expertise and facilities of its national laboratories. Over three rounds, DOE will provide up to $20M to support ~ 100 small businesses by issuing national lab vouchers valued between $50,000 and $300,000 per company. Round 2 is open from March 10 – April 10, 2016. All requests are due by 11:59 P.M. EDT on April 10, 2016.

Water Power
Harnessing the power of moving water is one of our oldest energy technologies and one of the most promising for our future. Wave, tidal, and traditional hydropower offer great promise for clean energy but present technical and logistical challenges. The U.S. Department of Energy is providing vouchers for products using waves, tides and waterways for environmentally safe power in these voucher opportunity areas.

Wind Energy
The domestic wind energy industry is growing rapidly and poised for even more growth. It currently supports over 60GW of installed generating capacity and 75,000 U.S. jobs, and the DOE has identified in its recent Wind Vision report that wind power could provide 20 percent of U.S. electricity by 2030. The U.S. Department of Energy is focusing on providing vouchers for small businesses that support the development of tools or products that can help to address significant deployment challenges for wind energy (e.g., environmental, permitting, infrastructure, and other human-use considerations) which must be taken into account to enable and significantly expand wind deployment.
