Dr. Mar Benavides, a senior research scientist at the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, has been named a 2025 recipient of the prestigious Yentsch-Schindler Early Career Award by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO).

Recognized for her groundbreaking research on marine nitrogen fixation, Dr. Benavides has challenged traditional views on nitrogen cycles, demonstrating their importance in unexpected environments such as the deep ocean and coral ecosystems. With over 64 published papers and significant research funding, she has made major contributions to microbial oceanography.

Beyond research, she is a dedicated mentor, supervising multiple students and postdocs while advocating for diversity in science. She also engages in public outreach, including national TV appearances and global research collaborations.

Dr. Benavides will receive her award at the 2025 Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Charlotte, USA, this March.

“Dr. Benavides’ accomplishments underscore her keen ability to integrate multidisciplinary science with impactful mentorship and outreach efforts,” says ASLO President Susanne Menden-Deuer. “Her contributions will impact the field of microbial oceanography for years to come.”
