UN to Review Russia’s Arctic Shelf Expansion Claim August 8-12

Russia is set to present its claim to expand the boundaries of its continental shelf in the Arctic at a meeting of a UN sub-commission on August 8-12, Interfax news agency reports citing data from Russia's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

A group of experts from various agencies and research institutions has been created to present and defend the claim.

According to Interfax, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Khloponin met with the representatives from these agencies to discuss the preparations for the presentation of Russia’s bid.

Russia filed the claim to expand its continental shelf in the Arctic in February, 2016, seeking to expand its borders in the Arctic by 1.2 million square meters. It could take the UN commission from three to five years to review the claim.
